Registration for the new European .eu domain was launched in December 2005.
Having a European domain name is an exciting prospect which will allow businesses and individuals to create a European-wide identity on the internet as well as help to promote the identity of the European Union itself on the electronic media.
The first four months' registration was a Sunrise Phase, and was restricted to public companies and trademark owners. This was to help legitimate businesses purchase domain names, and avoid the risk of cyber-squatters taking names which are not legally theirs.
