e-GIF stands for e-Government Interoperability Framework. The main focus of the e-GIF is the adoption of Internet and World Wide Web specifications for all government systems, in order to reduce both cost and risk for government systems and align those systems with the global Internet marketplace.
Based around only those strategies well supported in the marketplace, the framework is mandatory for all public sector systems and aims to create an environment for the seamless flow and exchange of data between these systems. The key technologies currently behind the e-GIF are XML and XSL, with XML schema as the foundation provided centrally for use throughout the public sector.
The e-GIF also incorporates the e-Government Metadata Standard (e-GMS), which will act as the guidelines for the way data is described across the public sector. The e-GMS should help the public find government information and data simply and easily, without the need for specialist knowledge.
Based on the Dublin Core standard for metadata, the e-GMS will be developed specifically for use in the public sector.
The e-GIF is vitally important to UK websites and systems, especially those based or working closely with the public sector. If nothing else, it provides a good template of best practice on which individual systems manipulating data should be based.
